Counseling Philosophy

As an experienced, creative therapist located in Portage, MI, I have developed a balanced, relationship-driven and outside the box approach to working with individuals and families from diverse populations. I have extensive experience working with children, adults and families with various concerns including mood disorders, behavioral problems, family conflict, eating disorders, ADHD, and dual diagnosis.   While I do not subscribe to any one modality of treatment, I have training and experience in utilizing Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), expressive arts therapies, and holistic approaches. I believe it is important to help clients identify their goals and needs and then tailor sessions to meet clients where they are at.

I am especially interested in working with adolescents and young adults and their families and I am extremely passionate about the clients with whom I work. I tailor my sessions to meet each individual's (or family's) needs in a unique, client-centered way. When working with diverse individuals, I integrate expressive arts, DBT, CBT, and mindfulness techniques to express feelings and thoughts and develop healthy coping skills.

I believe before any therapeutic work takes place, a working, collaborative relationship needs to be established. Therefore, I am very intentional in building healthy relationships that establish a foundation for therapy with individuals and families. I am committed to providing a safe and inclusive space for individual and families from all racial, cultural, ethnic, gender, sexual, socio-economic identities and abilities.

Land Acknowledgement

My office sits on the land of the Council of the Three Fires – the Ojibwe, the Odawa, and the Potawatomi. Indigenous nations of the Great Lakes region are also known as the Anishinaabe (Ah-nish-nah-bay), or original people, and their language is Anishinaabemowin (Ah-nish-nah-bay-mow-in).  I acknowledge the enduring relationship that exists between the People of the Three Fires and this land.
